VOLUME 2023            APRIL 26         NUMBER 30

President Thad welcomed everyone, and all joined in the Pledge of Allegiance/Flag Salute.

PROGRAM:   Thad Hall turned the program over to Sharon Fincham for our Theodore Roosevelt Elementary Youth of the Month recognition.  Sharon introduced Principal, Ashley Smith and teachers, Randi Schlossman, Whitney George and Michelle Wilkes.  They were all happy to be here with their students and were all very appreciative for all Manhattan Optimist’s do.

Katelynn M

Mike Fincham was up first and introduced us to 1st grader, Katelynn M., here today with her mother Sarah and brother Brantley and her grandparents, Charlene and Bill.  Nominating teacher, Michelle Wilkes had the following to say: “I nominated Katelynn for the Optimist Club Youth of the Month award because she is a helpful friend to all her classmates and her teachers.  If a student may be feeling sad, Katelynn wants to be there to comfort them.  She has made so much personal growth with staying on task and always giving her best work effort!”

In speaking with her family, Mike added, Katelynn’s nickname is “chickadee” and sometimes “sis”, she likes to ride her bike, swim, do balance beam and bars in gymnastics and drive her little Pink Jeep.  She likes art and crafts, drawing cats, her favorite colors are blue, purple and pink and she likes to listen to “go Noodle” music and play with her dogs, Ranger and Otto.

Juliet F

Next, Sharon Fincham introduced 3rd grader, Juliet F., here this morning with her mother Jessica.  Teacher Randi Schlossman had the folllowing to say about Juliet:  “I would like to nominate Juliet for the Optimist Club Youth of the Month.  Juliet helped out tremendously today during pictures by getting other students’ attention to help direct them where to stand, while doing it all in a positive way.   The picture ladies even gave her a shout out afterwards. Besides today, Juliet comes to school each day with a positive attitude and is ready to learn.  She Is always encouraging others around her to do their best and reminds them that it is okay to make mistakes. That simple reminder had turned around other students attitudes many times this year and I am so thankful she is a part of our class family!”

Sharon added, Juliet is a great organizer as shown on picture day.  She likes to swim, ride her scooter and loves to read chapter books.  She also likes her animals, hedgehog, Daisy and dogs Peach and Olive.  She is a very helpful young lady.

Brant K

Lastly, Greg Wurst introduced us to 4th grader, Brant K. who was here today with his mother Jackie, father Brad and brother Brock.  His teacher Whitney George said the following about Brant: “I would like to nominate Brant for the Optimist Club Youth of the Month award.  Brant is a very kind student who constantly has a positive attitude.  When Brant sees a student/peer struggling with behavior, he encourages the student to calm down, try again and stay positive.  Brant works hard in class even when he struggles with reading.  He never gives up; he asks for help and goes above and beyond the classroom expectations.  He is often a quiet student who blends in with all the 4th graders but lately, Brant has stood out being a role model to his peers and just being an awesome 4th grader.  Brant deserves this nomination because he is kind, caring, positive and a leader to his peers.”

Greg shared with us that Brant likes math and reading.  He loves to play baseball and he has two dogs, Rio and Sissy!  One other thing, Brant is a Jackie Robinson expert, anything you need to know, just ask him, they recently did book reviews, where they chose a book to do a report on, he chose Jackie Robinson and actually read two books!! Great job!

We Optimists salute all of you for your positive attitudes, the brightness you bring to your classrooms and wish you nothing but the best in the future!  Keep shining bright!
